For decades, as a middle school, high school, and university English teacher and professor, I dedicated myself to my students, teaching them to appreciate the beauty and nuances of language.
It wasn’t until I turned sixty after I retired from teaching and my nest was empty, that I found myself at a crossroads. For the first time in decades, my days were my own.
I dusted off the easel in the garage and set it up by the large window in the spare bedroom. And then, with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, I began to paint.
The spare bedroom became my studio, the walls lined with canvases of all sizes, each telling a story that words could not. It was as if I had discovered a part of myself that had been waiting patiently for decades to be set free.
My paintings began to attract attention. My friends and family praise encouraged me to take a bold step to share my work with a broader audience, and soon, I was invited to exhibit my work in galleries and art shows. My paintings actually started selling.
I realized it was never too late to pursue a dream, so my life as a painter began at sixty, but it was no less meaningful for coming later. I found my true self in the vibrant hues of my paintings, and in doing so, I discovered a new way to share my stories with the world.
And so, Amanda, the English professor, became Amanda, the artist—an identity that I wear with pride and joy, knowing that I had finally fulfilled the dream that had always been a part of me.
